Sara Berlin, LMSW

For Sara, the inspiration to become a licensed therapist wasn’t a singular moment, but a lifelong role model. Growing up the daughter of a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Sara witnessed firsthand the profound impact of showing up for people in need. While her therapeutic path is uniquely her own, her mother inspired her to become an empathetic listener, a creative problem-solver, and a clinician deeply aware of the lasting influence a therapist has on a client's life.

Sara’s passion for her specific niche ignited during her undergraduate years. Observing her peers navigate changing self-esteem, shifting identities, and relationship milestones, she realized how vital it is to have a dedicated space to process these transitions. Today, she is honored to provide that exact anchor for her clients.

Trauma-Informed Care and Healthy Relationship Counseling

During her graduate training and early career, Sara specialized in working with at-risk youth and families, providing intensive, trauma-informed care. Through this vital work, she recognized a widespread, repeating pattern: many clients struggled with a profound lack of community support and needed education on how to build healthy relationships.

Whether working with an individual or a couple, Sara serves as the essential link that bridges past family patterns with future connection. Her expertise focuses on helping clients deconstruct barriers, heal from past trauma, improve interpersonal communication, and elevate their self-esteem.

Her Counseling Style: Warm Perspective-Shifting and Active Listening

Sara describes her therapeutic style as a blend of friendly, active listening and gentle perspective-shifting. She provides a safe, comfortable, and collaborative environment where clients feel entirely secure voicing their deepest vulnerabilities.

Honesty and transparency are core pillars of Sara’s practice, and she maintains consistent, intentional check-ins with her clients throughout their journey. While she is a supportive ally, Sara isn't afraid to challenge her clients to dig deeper for internal insights. Her ultimate reward is witnessing individuals find the strength in their choices, discover their authentic voice, and feel empowered to take the next step in their lives.

A Multifaceted Approach and Appreciation for Individual Context

Growing up in a Metro Detroit suburb, Sara’s worldview was shaped by a rich mosaic of experiences. Witnessing two completely opposite family dynamics—one deeply connected and the other distant—gave her an early appreciation for the complexities of family relationships. Furthermore, because the traditional gender roles were reversed in her childhood household, Sara developed a unique perspective that she uses today to educate clients on gender expectations and navigate the effects of toxic masculinity.

Her Jewish heritage, combined with growing up in a beautifully diverse community with close friends from different cultural backgrounds, taught Sara the critical importance of inclusivity and curiosity. She rejects "one-size-fits-all" mental health care, recognizing that every individual and couple brings a distinct set of values, cultures, and evolving perspectives to the room.

Beyond the Office: Bowling, Unicycling, and Adventure

Outside of her clinical work, Sara channels her creative problem-solving into some highly unique hobbies. A bowler since childhood, she still plays regularly in a social league at a local alley. A few years ago, she and her family took up the challenge of learning to unicycle, and you can now find her practicing during the week with a local club.

Sara is also an avid reader who helps run a friend-based book club, and she loves "mixing up" recipes to experiment with new dishes in the kitchen. When it's time for a vacation, she heads outdoors for hiking and camping adventures. A passionate domestic traveler, Sara has already explored 36 states (plus Washington, D.C.) and is actively working on her goal to visit all 50!
